Drug Addiction: Mental And Physical Signs

by Arnold Chinger

Do you suspect a friend, family member, or loved one may be suffering from a secret problem with drugs? While all addictions are unique in their own way, there are certain behaviors usually acted out by someone dealing with a serious addiction, no matter what the substances or addictive need is. This article will take a look at the behavior that often reflects addictive problems.

Drug addiction has an exhausting effect on the body. Individuals abusing drugs will show physical signs of their use. There may be an inexplicable increase in energy and an inability to fall asleep. A persons reactive time might be off, they might speak abnormally (slurred, oddly timing their words, etc) and act confused or disoriented. The body could see an increase in sudden weight gain or sudden wight loss.

Users who suffer from addictions in which the route of entry is to smoke them might reveal their actions by coughing consistently. Injected drugs will leave a needle mark trail on the arms (or other body parts.) Watch out for the wearing of long sleeved shirts in the wrong seasons, as this is often used to hide needle marks or scars on the arms. Finally, the presence of drug paraphernalia such as pipes, papers, foil, and lights suggest at least the presence of drugs and the potential for abuse.

Drug abuse has no less effect on the mind than it does the body. Abusing drugs tends to lead to rapid changes in emotions and behavior and ones mental mindset. If someone changes inexplicably, has rapid mood changes, suffers from anxiety or paranoid delusions, it is possible drugs could be the cause of these changes. Note that under the influence of drugs a person can experience psychotic states of mind and behavior. These behaviors usually only last for the duration of the drugs effect on the body.

The signs discussed above are of serious consequence for the user and the users family. If you suspect someone you love is dealing with a drug problem, an intervention may be necessary to confront the user and force the addiction problem to the forefront of the situation. The good news is there are many rehab centers throughout the country, as well as counseling and support group therapy available on line and in person.
